-**A:** Software rendering loads the game faster than hardware rendering, at the cost of requiring fullscreen mode on the Oxide-nl patch.+**A:** Software rendering loads the game faster than hardware rendering by a significant amount. This can either be done with the Oxide-nl Patch via reddit (now deleted but not lost) OR via the GOG distributed patched version where you can run in windowed mode as well.

+**Q: I heard the Oxide-nl patch is required to play the PC version?** \\
+**A:** That information has been outdated to a degree. The Oxide-nl patch - also known as Reddit patch - was distributed via Reddit from 2016 onwards until (presumably) a copyright claim has forced Reddit to remove the download link to the patched game files. Archive.org however stil has a unchanged version of that Reddit post. The alternative to the Oxide-nl patch is the version that GoG is actively still selling and distributing via their storefront. This version is also patched and working on modern machines. The big difference between the Oxide-nl patch and the GOG patch is that the oxide-nl patch can only be run in fullscreen mode, whereas the GOG patch can run also in windowed mode. Additionally for Windows 11 users, it was observed that on the Oxide-nl patch the game softlocks after inserting the hot PAL-key. Otacon calls you still but the door doesn't open anymore. There is no currently known fix under Windows 11 other than being forced to play the GOG patched version of Metal Gear Solid on PC (2000).
